In case you didn’t already recognise this, it’s the well known and possibly overused Proust Questionnaire, as found in Vanity Fair.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Loneliness.
Where would you like to live?
In Melbourne. If not, Byron Bay or somewhere exotic like Florence. Never in the same place for too long.
What is your idea of earthly happiness?
Being absorbed in a book to the point that I’m completely and utterly switched off to my surroundings.
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?
To insecurity.
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?
The Master from The Master & Margarita because he burned his novel; Mr Darcy and Mr Rochester, neither of whom need an explanation.
Who are your favorite characters in history?
Writers I admire: Bronte, Austen, Bulgakov.
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?
The women who surround me in my immediate family as well as the Bloom ladies (www.bloomasia.org).
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?
Jo from Little Women, Antje Strubel (she’s not fiction but she writes it!) Alice.
Your favourite painter?
Don’t really think I know enough about painters to answer this one. But Esao Andrews is amazing.
Your favourite musician?
David Bowie first and foremost. Finn Andrews from The Veils.
The quality you most admire in a man?
Ability to laugh at himself.
The quality you most admire in a woman?
Excellent articulation.
Your favorite virtue?
Patience, because I don’t have it.
Your favorite occupation?
Writer.
Who would you have liked to be?
A musician.
Your most marked characteristic?
Inability to keep my mouth shut, and ability to say inappropriate things at inappropriate times.
What do you most value in your friends?
Loyalty with honesty.
What is your principle defect?
Procrastination, snobbery, flightiness.
What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?
To be deprived of music and literature and humour.
What would you like to be?
Better.
What is your favorite color?
Green.
What is your favorite flower?
Sadly, the beauty of flowers is lost on me.
What is your favorite bird?
Birds scare me.
Who are your favorite prose writers?
Oscar Wilde, Charlotte Bronte, Lewis Carroll (although I like his poems as well).
Who are your favorite poets?
I don’t read much poetry but I like Frost and Dickinson at the moment.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My favourite writers are my heroes.
Who are your favorite heroines of history?
Queen Elizabeth.
What are your favorite names?
I like the names of my favourite characters. Like Alice. I also like the names Oscar, Max and Angus.
What is it you most dislike?
People who don’t reach my expectations (and I’m no exception)
What historical figures do you most despise?
Is Rupert Murdoch a historical figure? And Pizarro, for pillaging ancient Peru. Well, not ancient Peru. Old-time 1600’s Peru.
What event in military history do you most admire?
I don’t admire it at all, but am most fascinated by the story of Brisbane Line drawn across the country during World War II as the Japanese made their way ever closer.
What natural gift would you most like to possess?
Social skills.
How would you like to die?
Quickly and nobly.
What is your present state of mind?
Frustration because I can see Proust’s answers as I write this and it’s hard not to be influenced by these.
